Alexion Launches Pass the Cape on Rare Disease Day 2018 to Honor the Rare Disease Community

In celebration of Rare Disease Day 2018, Alexion launched Pass the Cape, an online initiative that encourages members of the rare disease community to recognize the heroes in their lives, including family members, friends, teachers, or healthcare providers, for their unwavering perserverance and/or support.

Pass the Cape is part of Alexion’s Uncommon Strength campaign, which aims to raise awareness of rare diseases through the celebration of the extraordinary resilience and inner strength of the people living with these diseases. The U.S. rare disease community is encouraged to take part in Pass the Cape by visiting and passing a digital superhero cape via email or social media to individuals who are fighting illness or providing help and support throughout life’s daily challenges and triumphs.

Each digital cape shared will be tracked and displayed on an interactive online map on Uncommon For every cape shared, Alexion has pledged to donate $25 to the following rare disease organizations, with a goal of reaching a combined donation of $30,000:

  • Myasthenia Gravis Foundation of America
  • aHUS Foundation
  • The Magic Foundation (HPP)
  • Soft Bones (HPP)
  • LAL Solace
  • The Aplastic Anemia and MDS International Foundation (PNH)

“Rare Disease Day, on February 28, offers us an opportunity to highlight the heroes who share our commitment to patients – to recognize their perseverance and celebrate their efforts,” said Max Colao, Head of U.S. Commercial Operations. “We are pleased to announce that Alexion is launching the Pass the Cape initiative in the U.S. to further recognize these heroes, while at the same time providing a charitable donation program to benefit the Patient Advocacy Organizations that are our allies in service to the rare disease community."
